Measuring Heart Rate Variability on the Apple Watch
The best known way to measure physiological coherence is by looking at our Heart Rate Variance, or HRV.
When our heart rate variability is high, our heart rate is increasing during an inhale and decreasing on an exhale, which is the optimal performance for a balanced nervous system. You can measure your HRV to track your own systems regulatory response to give you a direct experience with how important the power of coherent breathing is. Remembering that high HRV is optimal, experiment with breathing normally and then try the 5 Count Breath.
To Measure HRV on the Apple Watch
You can find a broad overview of your HRV by looking at it by Day, Week, Month, or Year.
Open your iphone
Go to the Health App
Select Heart then select Heart Rate Variability
For more detailed data and a manual breakdown of your HRV you can use the Breathe App on your Apple watch.
Begin by finding a quiet place where you can be still for a minute.
Sit up with your spine straight, or lay down if that is better for you.
Open the Breathe App on the Apple Watch
Press “start” and begin and go through a breathing session
After you’ve completed the Breathe session, the HRV score can be found on your iphone.
Open the Health App
Choose the Health Data Tab and select Heart
Then select Heart Rate Variability
Go to Show All Data
